Who we are

About Us

The Optical Science and Nonproliferation Laboratory at the University of Florida is dedicated to advancing technologies and training the next generation of leaders at the intersection of optics, nuclear engineering, and global security. Led by Prof. Kyle C. Hartig, our team combines cutting-edge science with a deep commitment to education, collaboration, and impact.

Mission

Our mission is to advance optical and laser-based sensing with complementary radiation detection, achieve deterrence through capability in verification and forensics, and educate the next generation through rigorous coursework, inclusive mentorship, and hands-on research with national labs and security partners.

Vision

We envision a world where agile, precision photonic and quantum-enhanced systems render nuclear threats detectable by design—strengthening nonproliferation through deterrence through capability. Our group strives to be a recognized hub that bridges optical science, nuclear security technology, and policy, shaping transformative tools and cultivating the talent needed to keep society safe.

What We Do

Our research portfolio spans fundamental science and applied technologies, including:

  • Ultrafast laser spectroscopy and laser-based sensing for nuclear materials detection.

  • Advanced radiation detection methods for safeguards, verification, and forensics.

  • Machine learning and data analytics to enhance nuclear material characterization.

  • Remote sensing technologies for treaty verification and nonproliferation monitoring.

  • Nuclear policy research and engagement—connecting technology to decision-making through policy analysis, safeguards and export-control perspectives, tech-to-policy translation, and collaboration with government and international partners.

Our Approach

We believe the challenges of nuclear security demand interdisciplinary solutions. That’s why our group integrates expertise from optical science, nuclear engineering, and policy analysis, working hand-in-hand with national laboratories, government agencies, and international partners.

Training Future Leaders

Education is central to our mission. Every undergraduate and graduate student in our group receives mentorship, multiple internship opportunities with national labs and agencies, and support in pursuing fellowships and scholarships. Our alumni emerge as scientists, engineers, and policy leaders prepared to safeguard society through innovation and collaboration.
